Art Club After School

Exploration, play, and reflection fuel imagination and lead us closer to understanding and connecting with each other.

During Art Club After School, we immerse ourselves in a collective exploration of modern and contemporary art & design, as well as story-making and illustration. Through spontaneous drawing, improvisation, and brainstorming, we venture into the creative process behind art & design projects, and start to build a foundation for symbolic expression, an awareness of our surroundings, and other aspects of critical thinking. During this time and in this space we let our shared values—like respect, kindness, and rigor — mix and simmer in a melting pot fueled by ingenuity. We also get messy and play with paint!

Peeking through a hole can sometimes lead to the beginning of an art adventure, especially at MangoStreet.

The missing round piece of our project, inspired by The Book With a Hole by Hervé Tullet, was an invitation to familiarize the children with the language of art, play with bi-dimensional space, and embark on the collective experience of building and illustrating a book. The children explored the concept of positive and negative space by drawing both within circles and around circular cut-outs. The hole in our book became the main focus and starting point of their illustrations. What story is the missing round shape telling you throughout the pages of this book?
